So cute and great quality!

Misty K.

Dog wearing a puffer yellow dog coat with a fur hood

Awesome jacket, 3xl fit my 75lb dog perfect

Bobby R.

Two dogs wearing winter dog coats with sherpa lining and fur hoods sitting on a rug in a living room.

My dogs are picky about what they will actually wear and it seems they are ok with wearing these coats as they are Sherpa lined, super cozy and don’t restrict their movement at all! So cute on too!

Whitney

Dog wearing a blue Ruffwear dog winter coat with a leash passthrough opening on a walk

Our boxer has a very deep rib cage and Velcro closures have always come undone. This coat is AMAZING. Worth every penny. (Desmo is just over 60 lbs and a medium is the perfect fit)

Ashley T.

Black dog wearing a warm pink puffer winter dog coat jacket sitting in the snow with trees and sunset in the background

Great product!! Kept my pup warm and dry in the snow

Sarah G.

Dog wearing a fleece orange dog winter coat by Ruffwear standing on a carpeted floor with another dog in the background.

I was super impressed with the quality of the fit! Easy to get on and off, easy to move in and great value!

Jill M.

Dog wearing a blue puffer style dog winter jacket with fur lined collar standing on a wooden platform with trees in the background.

Keeps my big guy warm and cozy on walks. Love it!

Lee S.

warm dog wearing a weatherproof waterproof dog winter jacket in heavy snow accompanying a woman skiing

This is a very well made coat with warm Sherpa lining. It is easy to get it on and off my dog. I have a Vizsla - it was tricky picking the right size due to his deep chest but lean body. He is about 55 pounds - I ordered the 2xl and it fits well

Wendy D.

Dog wearing a teal dog winter coat (puffer jacket) standing in the snow with an orange ball nearby and looking warm and cozy

This is a heavy duty coat that last longer than the other brands that try to mimic this one. It’s the best quality.

Janie H.

Black dog wearing a black dog winter coat with fur lined hood. Dog jacket is puffer style with popcorn sherpa lining and stretch fit

Love the fur hood! Easy to get on and off and the sherpa lining seems really cozy.

Joely M.

Dog wearing a retro blue dog winter coat by GF Pet with orange trim standing on grass

Stylin at the park. Doesn't hinder running and playtime at all. Great coat!

Kevin B.

Senior dog staying warm with a stylish retro dog winter coat by GF Pet. Dog jacket has sherpa warm lining and water resistant shell

This was a great purchase. Perfect fit and keeps Jeff nice and warm. We love it.

Linda H.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Winter Coats

Do dogs get cold in winter?
Yes, dogs can absolutely get cold, especially those without thick fur. While certain breeds like Huskies or Malamutes have built-in insulation for cold weather, other dogs, particularly small or short-haired breeds, are more vulnerable to the cold. Older dogs, puppies, and dogs with health issues may feel the cold even more.

Tip: Take your dog out for short winter walks to test how they handle the cold. This helps you determine if they need a winter coat, boots, or other protective gear.

What type of dog coat is best for winter?
The ideal winter coat for your dog depends on several factors including breed, coat thickness, activity level, and your local climate. Smaller or short-haired dogs and senior dogs often need extra warmth and insulation. For snowy or rainy conditions, look for waterproof and insulated coats. In milder winters, a lightweight, water-resistant jacket may be sufficient. Always make sure the coat allows your dog to move freely while protecting them from the elements. At The Dog Outdoors we carry winter dog coats for any outing or adventure. Review details and more information about the lines of coats we carry above. We have tested and curated some of the best dog winter coats on the market in our opinion.

How do I measure my dog for a winter coat?
To get the correct size for a dog winter coat, measure your dog around the widest part of their ribcage (similar to how you'd measure for a harness). Be sure to check each product’s sizing guide to ensure a proper fit. Unlike human apparel, each dog coat manufacturer has different sizing guidelines. So a size medium in one brand might be vastly different than a different brand.

What other winter gear do I need for my dog?
Beyond a cozy winter dog coat, these winter essentials can keep your dog safe and comfortable:

Dog Boots: Protect their paws from ice, snow, and salt.

Reflective Gear or Safety Lights: Improve visibility during low-light conditions or evening walks.

What winter activities can I enjoy with my dog?
Winter opens up a range of exciting outdoor activities for you and your dog! Try activities like winter walks, hiking, snowshoeing, or even fun sports like skijoring or mushing. Always ensure your dog is properly outfitted with winter gear to stay warm and safe during these adventures.
